Judge Duke is an experienced judge having served two years as a District Court Judge before serving for the last 14 years as a Superior Court Judge.  On December 5, 1988, Rusty Duke was sworn in as a District Court Judge for Pitt, Craven, Carteret and Pamlico Counties.  On January 3, 1991, Judge Duke was sworn in as a Superior Court Judge for Pitt County, the new Judicial District 3A, where he is presently serving. 

Before joining the bench, Judge Duke practiced law for nearly 14 years as a general practitioner.  From 1976 through 1982, Judge Duke practiced law in Farmville where he was Mayor of the Town of Farmville for one two-year term. From 1983 through 1984 he was employed at Wachovia Bank & Trust Co.  From 1985 through 1988 he practiced law in Greenville at the firm of James, Hite Avery & Duke. 

Born in Farmville, North Carolina, Judge Rusty Duke was educated in the public schools. After graduating from high school in 1966, he attended Atlantic Christian College in Wilson for two years and completed his undergraduate education at Wake Forest University, receiving a BA degree in History in 1970.  Judge Duke received the JD Degree in 1974 from Wake Forest University School of Law and was admitted to the Bar that same year. From 1974 to January, 1976 he was a law clerk for the Honorable John D. Larkins, Jr., United States District Court Judge for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

Justice Mark Martin is a veteran judge with over 13 years of judicial experience.  In fact, he is the only member of the N.C. Supreme Court with previous experience on both the N.C. Court of Appeals and the N.C. Superior Court.  With experience as a judge on three levels of our court system, Justice Martin understands how legal decisions affect the lives of each and every North Carolinian. Because of his diverse judicial experience, Justice Martin consistently strives to uphold our Constitution, to render principled-decisions, and to preserve our individual freedoms.

Justice Mark Martin graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the North Carolina Journal of International Law & Commercial Regulation. He also earned a Masters of Law (LL.M.) degree in Judicial Process from the University of Virginia School of Law.


After graduating from law school, Mark served for two years as a law clerk to United States District Judge Clyde H. Hamilton. Following his clerkship, Mark worked as an associate at the McNair Law Firm in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1991, he was appointed as Legal Counsel to Governor Jim Martin.


In 1992, Governor Martin appointed Mark to the Superior Court bench. From 1992 to 1994, he served as a Resident Superior Court Judge in Greenville, North Carolina. As a Superior Court Judge, Mark presided over criminal and civil sessions in 28 North Carolina counties including Buncombe, Durham, Forsyth, Mecklenburg, and New Hanover Counties.


In 1994, North Carolinians elected Mark to the North Carolina Court of Appeals. During his tenure on the Court of Appeals, he participated in over 1,000 decisions and was the youngest Judge in the history of the Court of Appeals. Four years later, in November 1998, Mark was elected to the North Carolina Supreme Court. At the time of his installation in January 1999, Mark was the youngest justice in the history of the North Carolina Supreme Court. Justice Martin is currently the second most senoir member of the Supreme Court, a position known as Senior Associate Justice. Justice Martin has served on the Court for over seven years and participated in over 600 decisions. Justice Martin also helps prepare the next generation of lawyers by teaching at Duke, NCCU and UNC law schools.

Judge Eric Levinson

Judge Eric Levinson, a Republican member of the N.C. Court of Appeals, has filed to become a candidate for election to the North Carolina Supreme Court.  Judge Levinson is a native of North Carolina and graduated from law school at the University of North Carolina.  

Levinson is one of the youngest judges ever to serve in the North Carolina, having first been elected at the age of 27. Levinson is currently serving on the N.C. Court of Appeals, the state’s second highest court.  Before coming to the bench, Judge Levinson was an Assistant District Attorney in Cabarrus and Rowan Counties, where he prosecuted murderers and sex offense cases.  

Before his election to the N.C. Court of Appeals, Judge Levinson helped re-engineer Mecklenburg County’s child support enforcement courts.  Judge Levinson has also participated in a variety of domestic violence, criminal, and family court committees, and he is sought after to present lectures to other state court judges concerning difficulties facing our civil, family and juvenile courts.  In addition, he has taught a variety of constitutional, civil, criminal and general jurisprudence courses at colleges across North Carolina.

 

 
Judge Ann Marie Calabria

Judge Calabria served as a District Court Judge in Wake County from 1996-2002 before being elected to the N.C. Court of Appeals.  Prior to joining the bench, Calabria practiced law for ten years.

Since taking the bench, Calabria has actively been trying to improve North Carolina’s Judicial System by starting programs that include an Alternative Sentencing program, a Spanish Interpreters program, and an International Leadership Initiatives Program.

Calabria is a member of the North Carolina State Bar; North Carolina Bar Association; North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys; Wake County Bar Association; Wake County Association of Women Attorneys; and American Association of University Women.

Calabria graduated Summa Cum Laude from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a B.A. in History in 1977.  She received her J.D. in 1983 from Campbell University School of Law, and she is currently studying to receive her Masters of Judicial Studies from National Judicial College.

Kris Bailey currently serves as General Counsel to State Auditor Leslie Merritt.  Before this prestigious position, Judge Bailey served as a District Court Judge where he presided over thousands of cases per year.  He is also a member of the U.S. Supreme Court Bar, N.C. State Bar, Tenth Judicial District bar and South Carolina bar.  His previous experience makes him very qualified to serve as a Court of Appeals Judge.

A strong education has always been important to Judge Kris Bailey.  After receiving his B.S. in Business Administration from Freed-Hardeman College, Judge Bailey went on to receive his Masters Degree in Personnel and Industrial Relations from Winthrop University and Juris Doctor from University of Georgia. 

Outside of his professional life, Judge Bailey is very active in his community.  He serves as a church deacon, Sunday school teacher, Special Olympics Volunteer, youth soccer coach, and most importantly as a loving father and husband. 

 

Judge Kris Bailey strongly believes that our courts should protect marriage, the family, prayer, property and our Constitution… not destroy them.

Judge Donna Stroud is seeking election to the North Carolina Court of Appeals.  Stroud has served as a Wake County District Court Judge since 2004 where she has presided over thousands of cases including criminal cases, civil cases, and family law cases.  Her family law cases include divorce, child custody, child support, domestic violence, equitable distribution, and other matters. 

Judges must have solid education, excellent professional qualifications, and upstanding character.  Judge Stroud demonstrates all of these qualities.

Stroud graduated from Kinston High School in 1982.  She attended Campbell University where she completed her undergraduate education in only 3 years, graduating in 1985 with a B.A. degree in Government, summa cum laude.  She graduated from the Campbell University School of Law in 1988, graduating first in her class.

Stroud is a member of the Wake County Bar Association, North Carolina Bar Association, North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers and NC Association of Women Attorneys.
