Kay Hagan, Where is Your Home?
If Chameleon Kay and National Democrats are confused, imagine what North Carolina voters are thinking

RALEIGH—It’s been an embarrassing start to an embarrassing campaign.  Now that Democrat State Senator Kay Hagan is the Democrat nominee to run against Elizabeth Dole, the national Democrats are stepping in to help Chameleon Kay change her biography and thus – history.

In a Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) e-mail sent out yesterday, the DSCC noted that “…Hagan is a life-long resident of North Carolina.” (DSCC email, 5/8/08)

In the Lakeland Ledger, Hagan’s Florida hometown newspaper, an article was published which published, “Kay Hagan … who grew up in Lakeland… and graduated from Lakeland High School in 1971…” (The Ledger, Lakeland, Florida, May 8, 2008)

And in February of this year, the Ledger reported, “Kay Ruthven Hagan came home for a visit this week, but not just to see her dad, Joe Ruthven, or to reminisce about Uncle Bud, as the family referred to the late Gov. Lawton Chiles.”  (Bill Rufty, “N.C. Lawmaker Draws On Lakeland Ties,” The Ledger, Lakeland, Florida, Feb. 1, 2008)

But what’s more misleading, Hagan’s own campaign website doesn’t mention anything about growing up in her beloved home state of Florida.  It refuses to mention she attended college in Florida or that her father was the Mayor of a Florida community and still resides in Florida.  Is Chameleon Kay trying to change history?

The DSCC e-mail also notes that Hagan “raised her three kids in Raleigh …” (DSCC email, 5/8/08)

But that’s not the truth either according to Hagan’s website.  “Kay and Chip raised their three kids in Greensboro…” (Kay Hagan for Senate website, 5/5/08)

Chairman Linda Daves, North Carolina Republican Party, made the following statement:

“I realize the national Democrats recruited Kay Hagan and are running her campaign.  But between the letter from the DSCC and the Lakeland, Florida newspaper article, it left us wondering:  Is Hagan from Raleigh, Greensboro or Florida?

It’s one thing for Kay Hagan to change positions on the issues, or even change reasons why she ran for the Senate, but trying to change her roots won’t fool North Carolinians.”
