NCGOP Chairman Welcomes Heath Shuler to North Carolina

Blount notes that Shuler has voted in only four elections, informs him of the upcoming voter registration deadline

(RALEIGH) –Ferrell Blount, Chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, today sent a letter to Heath Shuler, a new Western North Carolina resident and Democrat candidate for US House District 11.  Blount welcomed Shuler to our state and reminded him of the upcoming voter registration deadline on April 7th.

“I notice that in the past few years, you’ve been registered to vote in both Tennessee and North Carolina,” said Blount in his letter.  “Given that you have only voted four times in the sixteen years you have been a registered voter,” he continued, “I certainly wanted to make sure you had all the information you would need to actively participate in your new home of Haywood County, North Carolina.”

Shuler has been registered to vote since January 1990, but has voted in only four elections – including once in a Republican primary on August 1, 2002 in Grainger County, Tennessee.  During that race, Shuler had strongly endorsed Republican Congressman Ed Bryant in his race for U.S. Senate, stating: “I appreciate his faith, his Christian witness, his stand [against] abortion.”  A July 23, 2002 article in the Memphis Commercial Appeal said that Shuler was drawn to Bryant “by a network of conservative Christians and abortion opponents attracted to his cultural conservatism.”

A July 18, 2005 article in USA Today further noted that in 2001 Shuler had also backed Republican Congressman Van Hilleary in his race for Tennessee Governor, and was even scheduled to hold a fundraiser for Hilleary.

“Heath Shuler has some strong Republican credentials in Tennessee, and we look forward to his many years of work in support of Republican candidates now that he has moved to Western North Carolina,” said Blount tongue in cheek.  “The conservative, pro-life positions he has endorsed in the past lead me to believe that he will strongly support our own WNC Republican candidates who have been fighting for family values and conservative principles for years.  We just need to make sure Heath Shuler actually shows up to vote on Election Day.”
