Will Kay Hagan Apologize For Her Broken Promise That North Carolinians Would Be Able To Keep Their Current Plans Under Obamacare?

Raleigh, NC – “If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan. Period.” That is the now infamous promise that President Obama made over and over again during the last several years.

The only problem is it isn’t true, and President Obama isn’t the only one who needs to be held accountable for misleading the American people.

Kay Hagan also falsely promised North Carolinians that if they liked their healthcare plan and doctor they would be able to keep both under Obamacare.

In a U.S. Senate floor speech in 2009, Kay Hagan, attempting to sell Obamacare to North Carolinians, promised that, “people who like their insurance and their doctors keep them.”

“The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee crafted a bill that ensures that people who like their insurance and their doctors keep them. They also expand access to health insurance for those without it and slows down the skyrocketing cost of health care. Three critical components that President Obama called for in his speech to congress two weeks ago.” (Senator Hagan (NC), “Healthcare Reform,” 9/09)

Kay Hagan also said, “we need to support the private insurance industry so that people who have insurance they’re happy with can keep it.”

“Hagan did not explicitly say she would back a public option. ‘We need to support the private insurance industry so that people who have insurance they’re happy with can keep it while also providing a backstop option for people without access to affordable coverage,’ she said.” (Kasie Hunt, “Republicans Vent As Other Compromise Plans Get Aired,” Congress Daily, 6/18/09)

Yesterday, White House Spokesman Jay Carney finally admitted that many Americans will not be able to keep their health care plan despite the repeated promises from President Obama.

“White House spokesman Jay Carney explained at today’s briefing that ‘it’s true’ some Americans will not be able to keep their health care plan under Obamacare…After some throat clearing, Carney said, ‘So it’s true there are existing health care plans on the individual market that do not meet those minimum standards and therefore do not qualify for the Affordable Care Act.’”  (Daniel Halper, “WH: ‘It’s True’ Some Americans Won’t Be Able to Keep Their Health Care Plan Under Obamacare,” Weekly Standard, 10/28/13).

“When Kay Hagan cast the deciding vote for Obamacare, she frequently repeated the false promise that if North Carolinians liked their plan and their doctor, they would be able to keep them,” said North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Claude Pope. “Too many North Carolinians are discovering that what Kay Hagan and President Obama promised them simply wasn’t true. Thanks to Kay Hagan, North Carolinians are being told they can’t keep their current health care plans and are being forced to pay for outrageous increases in their premiums. When will Kay Hagan hold herself accountable and apologize to the people she mislead in order to sell a health care bill North Carolinians never wanted in the first place?”

BACKGROUND: How Kay Hagan’s Broken Promise Is Hurting North Carolina Families

One North Carolina Mother Is Outraged Her Family’s Current Plan Was Cancelled, And Called Obamacare “A Nightmare For My Family.”

“One North Carolina reader was upset to learn her current $267 a month plan was being canceled and the cheapest option on the exchange would cost her family $750 a month. They don’t qualify for a subsidy, ‘Obamacare is a nightmare for my family,’ she wrote.” (Tami Luhby, “Top 4 Obamacare Complaints,” CNN, 10/21/13).

George, A Retiree From Charlotte, Was Told His Current Plan Doesn’t Meet Obamacare’s Requirements And A Comparable Plan Would Cost An Additional $980 Per Month.

“‘I’m 62 and retired…This creates a tremendous financial burden for our family. The President told the American people numerous times that… ‘If you like your coverage, you can keep it….How can we keep it if it has been eliminated? How can we keep it if the premium has been increased 430 percent in one year?’”  (Karen Garloch, “Insurance Premium Increases Shock Charlotte Consumers,” Charlotte Observer, 10/6/13).

Michael, A Father Of Two From Winston Salem, Will Now Have To Pay $10,000 More Annually For Insurance As A Result Of Obamacare.

“I’m angry that legislation has been passed that is forcing me to purchase something that otherwise I would not have to purchase….The president told us Obamacare would make health insurance affordable and reduce costs. It is now impossible for our family to afford private health insurance.”  (Karen Garloch, “Insurance Premium Increases Shock Charlotte Consumers,” Charlotte Observer, 10/6/13).

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney Refused To Answer A Question About A North Carolina Family That Was Shocked To Discover Their Premium Will Increase By 430 Percent.

“Asked by a reporter about a family in North Carolina that discovered their premiums will rise 430 percent, Mr. Carney said he could not address individual complaints. But he said “bare-bones” insurance policies were “part of the problem.”  (Dave Boyer, “White House comes clean: Everyone won’t keep health plan under Obamacare,” Washington Times, 10/28/13).
